The recent devastating earthquakes in Nepal have left many of us thinking about the families facing unimaginable loss. Natural disasters are, heartbreakingly, not uncommon in the region—and in their wake, the dangers facing women and girls only grow. But thanks to the wisdom of experienced grassroots partners, we’re learning exactly where support is needed most and how to help communities rebuild.
Amid this backdrop, Suntali’s story shines as a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and the impact of investing in girls and women.
Married at just 15, and raising a baby largely on her own while her husband sought work overseas, Suntali faced challenges that would overwhelm any new parent. Yet she was determined to build a better future for her family. She connected with local women’s groups—including VOW-supported Gramin Mahila Srijanshil Pariwar (GMSP)—to seek guidance, learn new skills, and build community.
Then another earthquake struck. Her home was destroyed. Her future felt uncertain. And despite a labor shortage, deep-rooted cultural bias kept her from being hired— the belief that women were too weak for the work.
But Suntali refused to be defined by others’ expectations. Through GMSP, she enrolled in a seven-day masonry training program. She excelled. She persisted. And she ultimately secured a job as an assistant mason, breaking into a male-dominated field and proving her strength, both literally and figuratively.
Today, she’s regarded as a leader and a change-maker in her community. As one neighbor, Kiran Thami, shared:
“Suntali has inspired us all with her hard work and dedication. She has become the role model of the community.”
Stories like Suntali’s demonstrate why VOW for Girls-supported programs are so essential. When girls and women are educated, trained, and trusted, communities become more resilient. Families rebuild faster. And the cycle of possibility expands far beyond one household.
Suntali is not an exception—she is part of a growing movement of women and girls rewriting what’s possible in Nepal and around the world.
