In Jharkhand, India, Nilam grew up in a community where girls were seen as burdens and often married off young. Her older sister was married as a child, and her parents planned the same for her. Constant restrictions and scrutiny left Nilam feeling voiceless, until she discovered the Feminist Approach to Technology Center.
At first, Nilam kept to herself, her confidence worn down by years of being silenced. But through workshops, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, she began to find her voice. She learned computer skills, took on additional responsibilities, and began speaking out against child marriage.
Today, Nilam is fearless. When she hears of a girl at risk, she visits families directly, sharing the dangers of early marriage and the protections available by law. She has already helped stop three child marriages in her village and is just getting started.
Nilam’s dream is to become a social science teacher so she can equip the next generation of girls to know their rights and demand change. As she puts it, the Tech Center was the turning point: “It gave me the chance to make a difference.”
Through her courage and leadership, Nilam is showing her community – and the world – that girls are changemakers, not burdens.
VOW for Girls is proud to support grantee partners like Feminist Approach to Technology Center, who are investing in girls like Nilam – girls who are standing up for themselves and, in doing so, for all girls.
